Frank W. Ockenfels 3 "Without Filter" preview

Yes, Frank's show is Saturday night from 6-10 pm but when Bonnie who runs the Fine Art dept at ICON found out I had to leave for Texas on Saturday, she told me I'm inviting you to a pre-opening bash the night before on Friday night. I said cool !

Nan Oshin & Kathleen Clark who runs the operation :)

This gentleman here Scott Jo is the first person to buy a copy of Frank's limited edition book. I wrote a few days ago that there were only 100 being made but I was mistaken. There is only 150 being made and they sell for $250 each. Less than 20 is available at the show though. Each book is hand stitched and signed so given the time frame, they couldn't make so many.

Frank with a copy of his book.

The thing I loved the most about the show was the placement of the images. Unlike the usual gallery shows where the work sit side by side in a rigid format, this show feels more loose and more like a sketch book....heck, it was like Frank took over the ICON and made the walls into his book ! Definitely a more organic feel to it. I saw the print I wanted and the price list was available - $1,500. Ah, deny. If I didn't have debts to pay off and a 5D MK II sitting on my wish list :(

So Canon was there, they sponsor the event. Happy to see Karen from Samy's, Lisa from Angeleno as well as Ramesh, the owner of the ICON and the rest of his crew :) I ended up talking to some of the folks about the photo biz and how it has changed since the 90s. Many old memories were bought out :)

I expect it to get crazy there for the opening on Saturday night so I advise folks to get there early and check out the work before it gets too packed.

The show runs November 21, 2009 - Jan 16, 2010.

Saturday November 21st 6 - 10 pm opening reception

Clark | Oshin Gallery @ the ICON
5450 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles, California 90036

BTW : APE (A Photo Editor) has a pretty extensive interview with Frank posted today. They talk about the show itself and it is pretty amazing to hear what Frank has gone through since the 80s till today. Best quote in the interview :

If you can’t light something in the first place, you shouldn’t be taking pictures. The whole point of photography is to find the light. To understand the light. You need to basically take that light and make it work for you, that the light is bringing you to what you want them to see

Definitely. I think folks rely too much on Photoshop these days but well, that's just my opinion.

Barry Underwood "Earth Engines" (Oakland, CA) (11/21)

"...His landscapes, while painstakingly staged, incorporate man-made light with an almost eerie naturalness. The glowing elements that should jar our eyes as electrical protrusions actually serve to capture nature with a new thesis: as a planet intrinsically altered by our footprint, though, not in that we've destroyed our Earth and things are too late kind of way..." - Mark Wilson (Gizmodo)

If you happen to be in Oakland this weekend, go run by the Johansson Projects gallery. Barry Underwood's photographic works will be on display there at the reception 5-8 pm. The show also includes a series of sound installations by artist Oliver diCicco.

Los Angeles, Portrait of a City

“Jim Heimann's new book, Los Angeles: Portrait of a City, is without a doubt the most comprehensive visual history of L.A. ever attempted." — Chris Nichols, Los Angeles magazine

Looking at this book makes me fall in love with Los Angeles all over again. For the past ten years I've had a strange relationship with his city and I suppose most transplants have similar feelings of love and hate with this city of angels. There were nights with Marty and Elaine @ Dresden Room where I stumbled out drunk and later found myself at Jumbo's Clown Room. Late night dining at Canter's, walking the streets of Sunset, wandering under the boardwalk of Santa Monica, hidden bars in downtown. As with other visitors I fell under the spell of the city.

Together in one book, TASCHEN has pulled together over the history of the city from 1880s to the present into over 500 pages of photographic delight. Jim Heimann (Executive Editor for TASCHEN America) edited this book with California historian Kevin Starr and LA Times book editor David L. Ulin.

On Thursday night, there is a gala fundraiser and book release party hosted by Diane Keaton and Benedikt Taschen over at Cross Roads of the World from 7-9 pm. Money raised goes to the LA Conservatory which works to preserve historic resources here in this city. Tickets are $70 and available online here or you can call 310-274-4300. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served and there'll be guided tour of the historic Cross Roads of the World from 7-8 pm. Each ticket holder receives an autographed copy of the book.

Frank W. Ockenfels 3 "Without Filter" in progress

Was over at the Clark | Oshin Gallery @ The ICON today just to check out the beehive of activity over there as they prep for Frank W. Ockenfels 3's show on Sat. As I looked through the images on the walls, I definitely recognized a few that I didn't even realized Frank had photographed. There's some beautiful works up there and I saw two pieces I loved but they didn't have the price list ready yet - but then again, I don't think I have spare hundreds lying around the house either ^^.

Bonnie who runs the Fine Art division of the lab was there and told me there'll be a special limited edition book they'll be releasing at the show on Sat. Can I see it I asked ? She hesitated then drew me deep into the bowels of The ICON to show me the book. Limited as only 100 copies, I believe only 25 will be available for purchase at the event. The price is somewhere around a few hundred bucks. Only for the die-hard Ockenfel fans !

Back in the main lobby, both Kathleen Clark and Nan Oshin were busily working on the placement of the images. I didn't want to disturb than any further so I bid a quick farewell.

The show opens on Saturday November 21st from 6 - 10 pm

Breach of Peace: Photographs of Freedom Riders by Eric Etheridge (11/19)

Breach of Peace displays forty contemporary portraits by photographer Eric Etheridge of Freedom Riders, who, in 1961, converged on Jackson, Mississippi to challenge state segregation laws. Their noble efforts were met with fierce hostility, and many of the young men and women were arrested and convicted of the charge "breach of the peace."

Breach of Peace displays Etheridge's photographs of several Freedom Riders, now senior citizens, alongside their original mug shots. The exhibition examines their involvement in the Civil Rights movement, takes a look at who they are today, and shares their unique perspectives on that historical period. Breach of Peace originated as part of the High Museum of Art's Road to Freedom exhibition, but has been expanded for the Skirball presentation to encompass related historical objects, including student activist buttons and newspaper clippings.

I first heard of this book from Rachel Hulin's old Photoshelter blog "Shoot ! The Blog" in Sept of '08. Here's a link and check it out as she asks Eric how the project came about and to describe some of the folks he photographed.

I found these two clips on YouTube. The first is about 6 minutes long and is an interview with Eric while at Kalamazoo Public Library earlier this year - Feb 2009. The next clip runs about a hour and is part of @ Google Talks series - which is a pretty great series. Google brings in all sorts of creative folks to let them talk about their work. Sometimes when I'm working, I just click over to the @ Google Talks YouTube channel, pick one at random and listen. Anyways, this hour video is from last year, 2008.

The exhibition runs from November 19, 2009 to April 11, 2010. This runs in conjunction with Skirball's Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956–1968 exhibition.

CNN : Stressful jobs that pay badly - Commercial Photographer

A photographer friend sent me this link from CNN dated Oct 29, 2009 about stressful jobs that pay badly. High stress and a meager paycheck are just another day at the office. Here are 15 of the most overworked and underpaid professions out there.. CNN lists social worker, event coordinator, probation officer, reporter, music ministry director, membership manager, fundraiser, assisted living director, minister, therapist, curator, substance abuse counselor, Film/TV producer, High school teacher and commercial photographer !

Each occupation they list the percentage of those polled who say they're stressed. Photographer is the only group to gets 100% !

Dang !

How Payscale.com defined high stress and low pay jobs: Starting from a database of over 2000 jobs, Payscale used data from over 36,000 respondents who ranked their jobs for quality of life factors, and chose those requiring a bachelor's degree or higher where the national median pay is less than $65,000. The survey was conducted between Aug 10, 2009 and Oct. 1, 2009.

You can see it over here.

Kent Anderson Butler "Chic" (11/19)

Los Angeles based artist Kent Anderson Butler will present a new series of photo-based tapestries in a solo exhibit titled “Chic”. The tapestries are all portraits of male figures that are bare breasted: a direct and imposing view of the figure. The figures are all acquaintances and family members of the artist and there is also a self-portrait. The figures in these portraits were taken against different backgrounds (walls of different compositions and textures) creating an interesting figure ground relationship. The unusual mix of digital and traditional techniques furthers the unusual quality of the work creating a very fresh and direct form of portraiture.

Danny Lyon in Conversation with Julian Cox (11/17)

Esteemed photographer, filmmaker, writer, and two-time Guggenheim fellow Danny Lyon—whose compelling images are included in the exhibition Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956–1968—reflects upon his life's work. Spanning more than four decades, his prolific career has included solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Among Lyon's key accomplishments is the work that he carried out as a college-age student during the Civil Rights movement, an involvement that has had great impact on his art.

Hear Lyon in conversation with Road to Freedom curator Julian Cox, Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. Their dialogue will be amply illustrated, with questions from the audience encouraged. Introductory remarks on the historical context of the Civil Rights movement will be given by Christopher Jimenez y West, assistant history professor at Pasadena Community College and former history curator of the California African American Museum. A book signing follows the program.

Preview the exhibition—See Road to Freedom before it opens to the public on November 19. The exhibition will be free and open to lecture attendees 7:00–10:00 p.m.

Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956–1968 (11/19)

Making its West Coast debut at the Skirball, Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956–1968 features more than 160 images that helped change the nation. Taken by professional and amateur photojournalists, social activists, and anonymous witnesses, the compelling photographs exposed injustice prevalent in America at the time, promoted solidarity among citizens, and dramatically increased the momentum of the struggle for equal rights.

The indelible images track historical turning points that occurred in the twelve-year span between the 1956 trial that followed Rosa Parks’ famed act of resistance aboard a Montgomery, Alabama bus and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968. Complementing the photographs are related archival objects and documents, which help to illuminate the hope and courage of the men and women who campaigned peacefully for social change.

At the Skirball, the acclaimed traveling exhibition has been enhanced to include a newly developed section on Los Angeles civil rights history—illustrating local events such as the picketing of the Kress Store in Pasadena in 1960 and the Watts Riots of 1965—and a documentary on the role of Jewish Americans in the movement.

Victoria Lichtendorf: It seems astonishing that Road to Freedom is the first major exhibition of Civil Rights photography in close to thirty years. How do you account for this lapse?

Julian Cox: I think it comes down to the fact that photojournalism and documentary photography do not have much of a home in fine art museums. If you look around the country, there are only a few institutions committed to showing this kind of work. The High wanted to appropriately mark the fortieth anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination; he’s an international figure, of course, but he’s also a great Atlantan, so again, we were trying to reach different audiences in putting together a show of this kind.

(( read the rest of the interview here ))

In conjunction with this exhibition, David Lyons will be in conversation with Road to Freedom curator Julian Cox about photography of the civil rights on November 17th @ 8 pm. More info can be found here. If you go to the talk, you'll get a chance to preview the exhibition before it opens. An Evening with Tim Wolcott (11/19)

Tim Wolcott says that photography must run through his veins because the Wolcotts have been in photography longer than any other family in the world. Alexander Wolcott received the first patent for a camera and had the first exhibition of photography in 1840 as well as the first studio. Tim got his start when he won a blue ribbon and a Gold Key Award in a high school competition sponsored by Eastman Kodak. He later apprenticed with George Phillips, a friend of Ansel Adams and the Westons. “I guess you could say I’m an apprentice to every piece of art I have ever seen.” Tim is a perfectionist, with an extremely high work ethic, creating images exactly as the master photographers taught him. His interest in fine art landscape photography began many years ago when he and his grandfather would walk through the woods.
